the gardens are a reflection of the changing seasons…

My growing practices and design approach mirror one another, and I aim to be as intentional as possible when planning. The flowers chosen are done so with much forethought and the gardens as well are tended with certain principles in mind…

  • Abide by the Seasons - this requires me thoughtfully planning based on the fickle Midcoast Maine seasons - as such the reward is an explosion of color from spring to frost by coordinating efforts with Mother Nature.

  • Manage Soil Health - in addition to using organic pest and disease control methods, organic fertilizers and plant food when necessary and beneficial - the healthiest plants grow in healthy soil. I use a lean tilling approach done by hand, which aerates soil without disturbing the underground ecosystem, allowing for efficient bed preparation and crop turnover during the season. I hand cultivate the soil with tools specially made for targeting weeds; using mulches and compost as well which in turn keeps unwanted plant growth at bay while simultaneously feeding the soil over time.

  • Co-exist with the local eco-system - for me this means saving space for native plant species throughout the property to allow native pollinator habitats to thrive. The gardens prosper when the surrounding habitat is allowed to thrive, a true reflection of the larger picture. Allowing space for native and beneficial flora and fauna in the gardens is integral to the overall well-being of the entire web.
